When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started?
It was right next door to Title boxing and wanted something new. Feb 2014 in a snow storm. The1st 2 days I tried to go Blue Valley schools were closed so was CF 913
What is your favorite/least favorite WOD?
Murph because of why we do it and it is a workout most people couldn’t think of doing. Also any Sat workout where I can be paired with Cam and use her weights. Anything that has EMOM in it.
What is your favorite/least favorite movement?
Favorite that’s easy anything with air Squats. I have been asked by CF Corp. to make multiple videos of my technique and style. Least probably anything that I have to lift by body weight. But those can be the most satisfying as well.I hate running, or any workout that makes me lose my breath and i have to stop talking.
Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)
I am married to Cathy for 9 years in Sept, we met in High School at Bishop Miege and reconnected 11 years ago. Believe or not I was not the ultra cool person you see everyday at the gym in High School. We have 2 daughters Morgan 7 & Brooklynn 5. We have a very tough but sweet Rottweiler name Harley. My real job is in sales with Heartland Payment Systems for 17 years and my side job is we opened a Bar soon to Bar & Restaurant in Emporia called Brickyard 20 Alehouse 2.5 years ago with a business partner. I have played soccer all my life and continue to try and compete usually once a week if i am lucky. I grew up in KC as well and graduated from where TJ didn’t because he partied to much. Sorry TJ that’s for throwing fries at me at my 40th Birthday. Very soon we will have our Brickyard Bus come up on Sat and pick everyone for a night in Emporia with plenty of food, drink and a cool band.
What was your workout routine before CrossFit?
Prior to CF I did Title Boxing for about 9 months but it never gave me the drive to get up before work and workout. Played soccer once to twice a week as well.
What did you think after your first CrossFit workout?
I really enjoyed it because it was completely different from what I had done before and after learning more about it i really liked the idea and a different workout everyday. Also the classes were smaller because the word had not gotten out that i had joined. So there was plenty of 1 on 1 training with TJ. Then Jess came along and she got all the 1 on 1 time.
What were your goals when joining CrossFit?
Lose weight I was about 235 lbs when I started and dropped about 20 lbs or so but have added muscle over the years. Plus I wanted to be sure that I could be super active with the girls as they grow up. Have you achieved any of those goals? Yes I have needed to buy new clothes, so each time to do I text Brady and TJ and tell them they owe me for the purchases.
Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?
It is great. Since I have lost weight and gained Muscle it has definitely kept Cathy interested. If you know what I mean. ;). Also when doing anything active I have been able to do as much as I want and always more than other people or friends that I am with. Going to the pool with the girls, they love that i can throw them and hold them up and well any other activity they want to do. The best has to be that it allows me to drink the all so yummy Vodka/Mountain Dew when I want. Plus not having to watch so closely what I eat all the time.
Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?
Yes beating Watson in my 1st scaled competition. This title is still has an asterisk next to it because of a possible no reps on air squats but lucky there is no video evidence so i claim the title. Ben, EmilY, MK & I did battle of Brave this winter as well. I am looking forward to the granite games in Sept and going for the 1st time. I have meet a ton of people that I believe I have had a positive effect on and have someone that has really change their lives. I met my current legal counsel here as well so that’s a plus. I have an incredible nicknames from working out here. P $$, Notorious Malone, the Pharmacists (bc I always RX), Anthony calls me Grated Cheese because I am Shredded.
What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913?
Keep going for at least 60 days because for me this is when I saw a change. Everyone can do it if they want and put in the time. It’s always about an hour.
Something you might not know about me is?
I have webbed toes, I did have hair at one point in my life. Yes I did do a 3 year tour with the all male revue “Thunder from Down Under” based out of Las Vegas until I blew out a hip. Seriously all these facts are true.
